Gimp helpful hints:
1) One way to recover data lost from an image (e.g. blurred pixels) is to use the Filters >> Enhance >> Sharpen menu option:

2) If the picture is in "indexed" mode, a prohibitive error will be encountered preventing any image editing/healing. To make it into an editable image again, simply choose Image >> Mode >> RGB format instead. This setting is harmless and has no restrictive side effects on the image quality/size:
3) To transform any particular color (say white) to transparent 🪧 background, select the color using the magic-wand 🪄 to form a selection, then from the "Colors" drop-down menu choose the option "Color to Alpha" so Gimp will automatically convert your chosen color (say white) to the alpha channel (checkered transparent) - equivalent to global find and replace in Word editor!
