Electron Mass

How can an electron have mass but no volume?

Mass and physical volume are completely uncoupled at the subatomic level.

In quantum physics, mass is not a measure of "stuff" filling a 3D space, but a fundamental property of energy and interactions.

Quantum Sizes:

  • Electron diameter = approximately 10-18 ~ 10-22 m.
  • Proton diameter = approximately 1.68×10-15 m.

An electron achieves mass without volume through two core principles:

  1. The Higgs Mechanism: The electron constantly interacts with the universal Higgs field. This interaction creates inertia (a resistance to acceleration) which physics defines as mass. Mass is a property born of this interaction, not physical size.
  2. Energy-Mass Equivalence (E=mc2): Einstein proved that mass and energy are interchangeable. An electron possesses a localized rest energy of 0.511 MeV. Because it holds this energy, it inherently possesses mass.

Furthermore, while the electron itself is a point particle, its quantum wavefunction "smears" its energy and charge over space, creating a physical presence without needing a solid physical boundary.

proton:

The rest mass of a proton is 938 MeV {≈ 1.7×10⁻²⁷ kg} with a diameter of about 1.68×10-15 m.

A proton is a composite particle made of three quarks, but if you add up the individual masses of those quarks (which they get from the Higgs field), they only account for about 1% of the proton's total mass.

The remaining 99% of a proton’s mass is generated by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) binding energy:

  • The Strong Force: Inside the proton, gluons are constantly flying back and forth, binding the quarks together with incredible force.
  • Kinetic and Potential Energy: This intense traffic creates a massive amount of kinetic and binding energy localized inside the proton.
  • Energy to Mass: According to Einstein's E=m·c2, this trapped, churning energy manifests itself externally as the physical mass of the proton.

electron:

An electron is a point particle which has no dimension, no size, no volume. It possesses a localized rest energy of 0.511 MeV. Because it holds this energy, it inherently possesses mass.

photon:

Whereas a photon of light is pure energy because it has no rest mass! A photon can never be at rest; it must always travel at the speed of light (c). Its energy is derived entirely from its momentum and frequency (E=h·f), rather than a static mass.
