The electrical powers carried in a copper wire are much greater than in air. The voltage or strength of the electric field must be strong enough to heat the tungsten filament (or bulb) to incandesce. The copper cable conducts the electric field (directly to the household appliance) preserving this voltage & preventing it from dissipating in every direction.
