Maxwell's equations predict the speed of electromagnetic waves. Specifically, they predict that these waves travel at a speed that is related to the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability of free space. This predicted speed, calculated from the equations, closely matched the experimentally determined speed of light, leading Maxwell to the conclusion that light itself is an electromagnetic wave.
